SWISS-AF Update
(Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Cohort Study)
Within the Swiss-AF cohort, the 7-year follow-up visits are currently ongoing in all Swiss-AF centers.
(7 years after inclusion) on the basis of approved research funds of the Swiss National Science Foundation (Swiss AF-
Brain Study, SNSF Grant 32003B_197524, Leo Bonati, Michael Kühne). Only a few visits are still outstanding, so that
statistical analyses can begin shortly, for example on brain perfusion in patients with atrial fibrillation. In addition, the
10-year follow-up of the first study patients is already underway.
The aim of the Swiss-AF study is to investigate the long-term development of cognitive function, vascular changes in the
brain and neuronal biomarkers in patients with atrial fibrillation.
In parallel, we will survey the control group without AF in a total of nine Swiss-AF centers (Swiss-AF Control Study,
SNSF Grant 324730_192394, Stefan Osswald, USB, Tobias Reichlin, Inselspital Bern). The inclusion target was met
with 1003 patients included, so the baseline survey could be completed. could be completed. Follow-up visits are
currently underway. In parallel, the analysis plan for the first combined Swiss-AF/Swiss-AF Control analysis. The aim is
to determine the relationship between atrial fibrillation, the incidence of brain lesions and cognitive function.
The Swiss-AF BURDEN study has been running since 2018 and aims to investigate the relationship between atrial
fibrillation load (proportion of time in atrial fibrillation) and various outcome events. Atrial fibrillation load will be
determined using 7-day Holter ECGs, implanted loop recorders, or pacemakers/ICDs (SNSF Grant 32473B_176178,
Michael Kühne, USB). The data are now being cleaned and the dataset is being prepared so that statistical analyses
can begin shortly after the last follow-up visits.
The Beat-AF study (n=1550), which can be regarded as a pilot project of Swiss-AF, is currently in its 14th year. On the
basis of annual patient interviews (by telephone), events (such as stroke, hemorrhage, heart attack, etc.) are specifically
identified. Since the same master data are recorded in Beat-AF and Swiss-AF, the two studies complement each other
and can be combined depending on the research question.
COLECTRO-AF
The Colectro-AF (Colchicine after Electrocardioversion for Atrial Fibrillation) study, a randomized, placebo-controlled study,
started in April 2024 (SNSF Ambizione Grant PZ00P3_216611, Philipp Krisai). The aim of this study is to investigate whether
3 months of treatment with low-dose colchicine reduces the recurrence of atrial fibrillation after electrocardioversion in atrial
fibrillation patients. The study is currently running in 5 study centers in the Switzerland and 50 patients have already been included.
